Refresh the web: a proposal for the Drupal redesign

Drupal is in the midst of a massive refresh, from the ongoing development in Drupal 7 to the iterative design work on the website’s design and IA by Mark Boulton Design. Here at the nest, we’ve been quietly observing during most of it (we’ve been very busy on Digital Dollhouse), but I left a comment on Mark Boulton’s weblog a few months ago that said:

How about making the “r” a faucet that pours a water drop into the “u”? This creates the opportunity to use the same water drop as the main logo.

That idea didn’t really go anywhere but it didn’t go away, either. I posted it to Twitter hoping for some feedback, but as we all know a picture is worth a thousand words. I asked one of our excellent designers to do quick mockup:

Drupal. Refresh the web.

We’ve posted this to the redesign and marketing groups on groups.drupal.org and also invite you to leave your feedback here in the comments.

Surprisingly, the “Refresh the web” tagline has never been trademarked. One of the obvious downsides of crowdsourcing and building community consensus is how long it can take. An original idea may be proposed one day and unscrupulously copyrighted or trademarked the next, so here’s hoping for the best!

Conceptually I like the idea but I really hate the way that typeface looks and the stretching of the r also bothers me. I think it needs to be very carefully done to work.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m glad you like the concept if not this particular execution. My hope is that sharing this visually will better communicate that concept, which my comments a few months ago failed to do.

I agree, I like the idea, but it would need to be done better for it to take off.

I like the concept. It needs a bit of tinkering with the actual font and all, but I like it.

I absolutely agree
